Food Allergies

Food allergies are diagnosed based on the symptoms related to ingestion of a food and testing.  Food allergies are a common concern and can range from mild stomach systems to severe anaphylaxis in patients of all ages.  Food allergies are increasingly common.  Dr. von Elten often takes a thorough history prior to employing indicated tests.

Symptoms of food allergy may include:

• Hives

• Swelling

• Vomiting

• Diarrhea

• Abdominal pain

• Cough

 

Food Challenges

Food challenges involve ingestion of an allergen and observing for allergic reaction.  Dr. von Elten may recommend a food challenge if a patient has possibly outgrown an allergy or if there are questions surrounding a reaction and the culprit allergen is unclear.
