Richmond Tops Nation for Allergy Sufferers

Updated: Sep 6, 2021

Picture of Richmond during peak allergy season.

The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America publishes a list every year of most challenging cities for allergy sufferers, and Richmond was #1 for 2020. Richmond often appears in the top 10 of this list, which is based on pollen counts, over-the-counter allergy medication sales, and number of allergy specialists. This number one ranking will not come as a surprise to those living with allergies. This list was published in early April just as we started to see the yellow film of pollen appear on cars reminding allergy sufferers that spring had arrived.

So this list confirms what you already know. Now what? If you’ve tried over the counter nasal sprays and antihistamines without relief, seeing a board certified allergist is a great next step toward feeling better. Allergists help you identify and avoid triggers. We can optimize your treatment plan and perhaps try prescription medications you haven’t tried yet. If you also suffer from asthma, we can help you breathe easier with the right medications.

In addition to medications and avoidance of triggers, you may have heard of allergy shots, or allergy immunotherapy. Allergy shots are the most effective treatment for year round and seasonal allergies. They can also help asthma and eczema. Allergy immunotherapy retrains your immune system so that you no longer mount an allergic response to pollens, molds, danders, etc. Initially, shots are more frequent and then are spaced out with time. Many of our patients find allergy shots life changing. Allergy shots can improve allergies so that kids play sports and adults can get to work during allergy season without significant symptoms. You don’t have to suffer or stay inside all spring if we get the right plan in place for you.

We all love Richmond for the wonderful community and culture it has to offer. Whether you grew up in Richmond or made a life here, the pollen shouldn’t keep you from living your life. Our first priority at RVA Allergy is you. During your appointment, we’ll talk about your symptoms and goals in detail, determine what testing is indicated, and formulate a plan. Richmond may be a tough place for allergies, but having a good allergist in your corner can make a world of difference.
